Medical Kits and the Perfect Man

We had a visit from the Peace Corps Medical Officers today. We talked about how to stay healthy and about potential health concerns. Mary and I also found out that we have fleas. Yup, we're flea buddies. I only have a few bites on my lower legs which makes me think that they hop on when I'm walking through the streets and fields, have a quick snack and then jump off. I don't think they're in my room or clothes or anything. Though I sprayed the crap out of my room with bug-repellent just in case. Fleas. Sheesh. Apparently that pretty common in small farming villages like this one so I might as well get used to it. Maybe I'll start a circus, you know, to make a little money on the side.

We also got free bicycly helmets (cuz riding a bike without one could actually get us kicked out of the Peace Crops, yikes!) and tampons. Yeah for free tampons. Apparently they have a limited supply and when the PCMO's stash is gone we have to fend for ourselves and scour all of Bulgaria in order to find them. They are not common. But, as you can see, we're pretty excited about it. Bug repellent, tampons, helmets, and a water purifier. Doesn't get better than that.

I have more to say about the medical and health issues. Namely the medical kit that was given to all of us. My silly computer won't let me upload those photos right now for some reason but, oh, they're comin'! And you should be looking forward to it cuz that medical kit is full of fun goodies that I cannot wait to show you. Get excited.

This is a really fun acticity we did in language class the other day about My Ideal Man or Идеален мъж ми. I circled tall, dark, and handsome at the bottom. I also circled Al Pacino (circa 1980-something). I've got "very nice and smart but a little bad" as well as "around 30-years-old" and "charming and funny." I think that's a pretty good list concidering my limited Bulgarian.

Remember to Chew Like You Have a Secret

So, what’s with Amanda Bynes?

You know, the Amanda that started off as a quirky little girl on All That? The Amanda who then went on to star on the surprisingly hilarious show What I Like About You? The Amanda who has brought tears of laughter to many through her not-as-romantic-so-much-as-comedies? I miss that Amanda. She was so great.

Now, she looks like this:

And poses for this:

WHAT?!?!

When did this happen? Why did this happen?

Does she really think she has to sexify herself to morph into some grown-up actress stereotype? We have way too many of those as it is. Case in point:

She was a breath of fresh air. She was sweet and cute and funny with a capital BWAHAHAHAHAAA! You know?

Remember She’s the Man? With the hot guy with all his hotness right up in this area:

(I know, I’m a total hypocrite)

Now, that was a great movie. I can watch it over and over again. And you know what? She is comic genius. I’m not afraid to say it. Genius. I am a huge fan of Steve Martin and Brian Regan and my all time favorite comedian/awesome person is Bill Murray so I would never use the term comic genius lightly but that’s exactly what this girl is, brilliance wrapped up in a slightly gangly little bow.

We need Amanda Bynes back. In fact, we need more Amanda Bynes’s. Bynes’? Byners? Whatever. We need the opportunity to laugh our aces off with someone who is not afraid to make funny faces, act silly, and generally make a fool out of herself…and look hot doing it!

Yes, Amanda, you are a beautiful girl and don’t you forget it. You do not need to tan, lift, pluck, enhance, dye, airbrush, take-off, put-on, squeeze in, or stick out for anyone. Just stay the funny girl you’ve always been and we’ll be here for ya, ready and more than willing to laugh.

That’s better.

Get This Thing Off!

I went to Ross recently and bought some clothes because I was in desperate need (every pair of jeans I owned had holes in them – though, to be fair, some I purchased that way). When I got home to admire my new bounty (girls do that), I realized that the stupid little grey plastic security thingy was still attached to a sweatshirt like one of those little baby koalas to it’s mothers back. And I hear that if you try to pry it off yourself, ink will spray everywhere. What! So, it’s just ruined for everyone? Criminals need to be warm too, ya know!

Not saying that I’m a criminal or anything. I paid for that sweatshirt. I have the receipt right…wait, I just had it…Oh, here it…no. Crap.

So I take it back to the store to have the little thingy that’s clinging to the sweatshirt like some sort of strange, ugly bug removed, my friends, Amanda and Charlie, coming along for moral support (and the fact that they never – and I mean NEVER – pass up an opportunity to go bargain shopping). Right when I walk in the door the alarm goes off. Huh, that’s funny, I don’t remember an alarm going off when I left the store with this stupid baby koala attached to my sweatshirt like a Sea Beast wrapping it’s tentacles around an unsuspecting ship. Whoever invented that Anti-Theft Device should be killed. Too much?

I explain myself to the Sales Lady and she refers me to Security.

Perfect.

So then strolls over a man wearing a navy blue bomber jacket with a thin black mustache (I immediately began to fear for the girl he tied to the railroad tracks) and a look of “seriousness usually associated with unabridged dictionaries and old gorillas.” (Pessl, 2006)

“What seems to be the problem, young lady?”

“H-Hello, Sir. Well, it seems as though…I was just wondering if…Can you take this off, please?”

“Do you have the receipt?”

“Uh, well, no, but that’s only cuz I threw it away. But I totally bought this sweatshirt. I was with my mom and, um, we were shopping, and then, uh, we paid for it with…money. Promise.”

Let’s just say it took some serious persuasion, mostly on Amanda's part (I think there may have been some bribery involved at one point but, due to post-traumatic stress on my part, I can't exactly remember) before Bruce Willis allowed the Sales Lady to disengage the ink-bomb that was attached to my sweatshirt.

But then we decided to stay and go shopping. NOT my idea.

He already suspects (if only in the back of his mind) that I am a thief. Not only that, but a thief whose gotten away with her thievery in his store. So, of course, I assume he is watching me like a hawk, ready to swoop down and pull the multi-colored glass rooster (original value $49.99 - now marked down to $7.50!) out of my jacket pocket. Hey, how’d that get in there?

Have you ever noticed that when someone suspects you of something, you can’t help but confirm their fears by acting suspicious? Even if you’re completely innocent. You can feel you’re being watched and you begin to think of all the things you shouldn’t do to attract unnecessary attention and then, for whatever reason, that’s all you seem to be able to do.

Looking over my shoulder a bunch would seem suspicious. So, naturally, I do that. Watching people from the corner of my eye only to quickly look away when they notice is probably a bad idea. Check. Putting my hands in my pocket and out again repeatedly would seem strange. Done and done. Looking at the security camera entirely too many times may not be wise. And…Action!

I was so paranoid and aware of my every action that I started to feel unnatural. Robotic. Nothing looks less casual than trying really hard to appear casual. I couldn’t wait to leave. I started sweating, I think. When we did finally leave, I made an attempt to seem as unbulky as possible, streamlining my coat so there was no way that anything was hidden underneath it or in the pockets.

As we passed under the florescent lighting into the cool night air and I was finally free, I noticed the security guard outside smoking a cigarette and chatting up some chick.

Sigh.

Blame it on the Office Equipment

Remember that scene in Office Space where they take the copy machine and smash it to pieces with a baseball bat while gangsta music plays in the background? That scene was hilarious because, while most of us don’t relate to beating the crap out of an actual person in the middle of a vacant field and leaving them for dead, most of us can identify with the desire to take, let’s say, a shredder out back and shooting it between it’s crooked little teeth. (If you actually are in the mafia and do relate to baseball bat beatings and fitting people with cement shoes or whatever, know that I was really sad when James Caan got all shot up in that one movie)

Reaching my fingers into the machine (without unplugging it first cuz I like to live on the wild-side) and prying out, piece by stupid piece, all the little zig-zag strips of paper that keep clogging the dang thing - not my favorite job. Especially when I’m stooped over at an awkward angle, my not so insubstantial butt in the air, trying to suppress a stream of expletives when a man comes up behind me who has to clear his throat to get my attention (after standing there for who knows how long!) and I have to pull myself together and act like I’m not embarrassed so I can say, “Oh. Hello. How can I help you?” It’s moments like this when I think, “Huh, I have not come quite as far as I thought I would at age 25. I was so certain I would have an army of minions to do these menial tasks for me by now.” Turns out I am a minion. I don’t even know what that means.

Google Dictionary definition of a minion:

min•ion (mĭn'yən)
n.
1. An obsequious follower or dependent; a sycophant.

Ahem. I’m not proud of this next part but it was necessary as my vocabulary isn’t what it never was.

obsequious [uh b-see-kwee-uh s]
–adjective
1. characterized by or showing servile complaisance or deference.

sycophant [sik-uh-fuh nt, -fant, sahy-kuh-]
–noun
1. a self-seeking, servile flatterer; fawning parasite.

A fawning parasite? That can’t be right.

No, no. I simply have yet to reach my full potential. I blame the shredder.
